Summary of Scholarship Fund
Class of 1962 Summer Report
Yes! Once again, DHS '62 has outdone all other classes --plus the Alumni Association-- in scholarship awards for deserving
seniors.
According to our Scholarship Committee treasurer, Ginny (Beard) Gray,
Total donations for 2008-2009 were $7,082, including donations from four first timers, and six previous donors who have
not contributed in the last three or more years. We paid out $5,300 in scholarships this year, three at $1250 and one at
$1,550
We have already received our first two donations for 2009-2010, from the two friends of Richard Sizer who always send
their checks around the anniversary of his death.
These figures include contributions from 53 donors in all, including a significant gift from Justin Wilson, our first
DHS '62 scholarship winner and enduring friend of our class.
We were most gratified to see some former donors back on the list this year, as well as several first-time givers. This
proves that our confidence in the Class of '62 was justified. Despite repeated "bad news" economic reports, the
committee had decided to ignore the prophets of doom and increase the amount of our scholarship from $5,000 to $6200,
which we felt was duly symbolic not only of our class year, but also of our commitment.
As always --and as expected-- The Class of '62 came through!
But this is about so much more than simple "class rivalry", isn't it? We're hoping to encourage other classes to raise
their expectations as well as their efforts to support the kids of today. Soon there will be a brand new high school to
replace our old stomping grounds, and with that renewal, we hope to be part of a renaissance of spirit wherein many old
Owls do their part to cheer on the Owlets who are about to go out into the world.
May the 2009-2010 year of giving surpass even our current high expectations!
